American dog ticks, known as wood ticks, are common across most of the U.S., except in the Rocky Mountains. These brown ticks with grayish-white markings can grow between 3/16” and 5/8” when engorged. Their bodies are oval and flat, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
Though they prefer to feed on dogs, they can also bite humans and spread diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The highest risk of exposure is in spring and early summer. Checking pets and maintaining a tidy lawn can help reduce the chances of an infestation.
The Brown Dog Tick, recognized by its reddish-brown color, frequently infests dogs and is common in warmer regions such as California. While they prefer dogs, they can bite humans when canine hosts are not available.
Adult ticks are about 1/8″ in size, but they can expand to 1/2″ after feeding. In the larval stage, they have six legs, and as nymphs and adults, they have eight legs. Removing these ticks from pets immediately is crucial to preventing health risks. Regularly checking pets and cleaning their environments can help reduce infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks thrive in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, making them present in Bostonia. These ticks are most active during the cooler months, particularly in April and May. Adults prefer large mammals such as cattle, deer, and horses but can also bite dogs and humans.
These ticks are known to carry diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis in livestock has also been linked to these ticks. About 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, which can mimic Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is prevalent along the Pacific Coast, including British Columbia, and serves as the primary carrier of Lyme disease in these areas. These ticks are typically found in forests, grasslands, and areas near water but can also inhabit scrub-shrub environments. Though closely related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, this species is primarily found on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from early winter through early summer, while nymphs peak in April, May, and June. Nymphs feed on small animals like lizards and rodents and rarely target humans or pets. Regular yard maintenance and debris clearing can help minimize the presence of ticks.
Bostonia Pest Control starts its tick control service with a comprehensive inspection of your yard. Our technician will identify high-risk areas like tall grass, bushes, and shaded spots where ticks are most likely to thrive.
We’ll also inspect areas where pets typically spend time, as these are common places for ticks to gather. This thorough inspection is key to providing a customized treatment plan that ensures a tick-free environment for your home.
Our tick control service starts with a conversation to understand whether you need treatment indoors, outdoors, or both. For homes with pets, we often suggest treating both areas to ensure thorough coverage. This allows us to prepare the most effective treatment plan for your needs.
Our technician will then inspect your yard to identify areas with high tick activity. We treat up to half an acre using moisture-activated granules that provide long-lasting protection. If your property exceeds this size, additional areas can be treated for a small fee. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer to apply a precise treatment. This detailed process ensures effective tick elimination right from the beginning.
We offer a free follow-up two weeks after your initial tick treatment to handle any newly hatched ticks. Our technician will inspect the treated indoor and outdoor areas to ensure all ticks have been effectively eliminated.
Treatments will be reapplied as needed to break the tick life cycle and stop further infestations. Our focus is on maintaining a tick-free home and yard for the comfort and safety of your pets and family.
